Episode Details

Original tape date: December 6, 2013.

First aired: January 9, 2014.

Asian American Life takes an in-depth look at Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and how the international and U.S. communities are asssisting in the relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts.

When Typhoon Haiyan swept through the Philippines in early November, over four million people were left homeless, and without food, water or medicine – many of them with relatives in the U.S., where Filipinos are the second-largest Asian American group nationwide, and particularly in New York and New Jersey, where the Filipino population has grown by nearly 30 percent in the past decade. Reviewing the response to the humanitarian crisis, Asian American Life assembles a panel to discuss Relief, Recovery and Rebuilding The Philippines.

Meeting with series host Ernabel Demillo and series correspondent Paul Lin in the studio are Mario de Leon, Consul General of the Philippines Consulate General New York; Rolando R. Lavarro, Jr., City Council President, Jersey City, N.J.; and Devanand Ramiah of the United Nations Development Program. In addition, senior correspondent Kyung Yoon reports from Woodside, Queens (“Little Manila”), on the Task Force Haiyan movement, and interviews Chris Hilo, with the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns, and Chrissi Fabro from Anankybayan New York, a Filipino youth organization. Issues discussed in the broadcast are the nature of the international response, economic incentives to jump-start the economy, future disaster planning and procedures, and the international issue of climate change and its impact on the Philippines and other geographic areas.
