Original tape date: July 20, 2016.

First aired: August 3, 2016.

The National Book Foundation was founded in 1950 and is known for recognizing literary excellence, promoting the enduring value of reading and enhancing the cultural value of great writing in America.

Lisa Lucas, Executive Director of the National Book Foundation discusses book publishing with Carol Jenkins.

For 66 years, the foundation has held the National Book Awards to celebrate the best of American literature. In this discussion, they highlight Black writers who have won throughout 66 years, such as Author Ta-Nehisi Coates, who recently won for his book "Between the World and Me". We explore an emotional clip from his acceptance speech and touch on the 4% of Black participation in roles such as editors, agents and publicists.
