He was born on St. Kitts, educated at Oxford, and is now teaching in the United States, but CANAPE recently found award winning novelist Caryl Phillips in a bookstore on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. He talks about his passion for Caribbean literature as a whole and for some masters of the French islands whose work is now available in English.
Renoir to Picasso
Who says cowboys won't be impressed by the Impressionists? While the Musee de l'Orangerie is closed for renovations in Paris, some lucky Texans are getting to see the collection of great modern French paintings assembled by the dealer Paul Guillaume. Senior Curator Charles F. Stuckey at the magnificent Kimbell Museum of Art in Ft. Worth tells CANAPE about the flavors of this delicious exhibition.
French fashion and art have always been happy bedfellows. Now the worlds of the hair salon and performance art meet to explore the cut of the month. Two French artists who call themselves The Toasting Agency have set up shop in New York for a month to cut hair and make art. CANAPE stops by for a shampoo, rinse, and explanation.
The Taste of Others
The gifted actress and screenwriter Agnes Jaoui has now taken the plunge as a director and her first film The Taste of Others is no less than the French entry for the Best Foreign Language film of the Academy Awards. On a recent stop in the United States the fledging director chatted with CANAPE about her universe of stories, the life of contemporary France.
The holocaust still haunts us. The new film Voyages explores a trio of stories set in Poland, France, and Israel. Each episode reveals how the events of fifty years ago continue to resonate today in the lives of the Jewish survivors. Director Emmanuel Finkiel tells CANAPE why no single story can capture what remains elusively, subtly irreducible.
