Translating Morocco
While doing research on literature in Morocco, Emma Ramadan decided to partner with Words Without Borders to translate texts from 10 authors never published in English. Among them, Ahmed Bouanani one of the contributors of the important journal Souffles. Founded by Abdellatif Laâbi, "Souffles" acted as a platform for artists and intellectuals opposing colonial rule in the 1960s. The journal celebrates the 50th anniversary of its creation this year. Canape sits down with Ramadan who helps us remember Laabi.

Tribeca Film Festival
This years' Tribeca Film Festival showcased “As I open my eyes,” the first film of Tunisian filmmaker Leyla Bouzid. It tells a story of a group of musicians confronting surveillance and oppression under Ben Ali. We had the opportunity to meet the actor Baya Medhaffar, who plays the lead role. She told us of the similarities between the Ben Ali regime and today's regime that toughening of the rules against youth and artists in Tunisia.

Maylis de Kerangal
Novelist Maylis de Kerangal is renowned as a writer and publisher. She self published her first novel, Je march sous un ciel de traine in 2000, and has since contributed to the journal Inculte Collective. Her innovative and playful prose style has led to critical acclaim. While in New York, we had the opportunity to meet Maylis and discuss her work.

Sanba Zao
For Sanba Zao Haitian roots music is all about history and community. His latest collaboration Lakou Mizik is no exception. The Kreyol word "Lakou" means gathering place, or home. Their debut album Wa Di You is now available.

Anna Karina
This May, a new restoration of Jean-Luc Godard's classic film “Band of Outsiders” will be showing at Film Forum in New York. In honor of this event, Canape revisits an interview with the star of the film, “Anna Karina.”
