(2002/Bangladesh, 98 min., color, drama, in Bengali with English subtitles) Dir.: Tareque Masud. Cast: Nurul Islam Bablu, Russell Farazi, Jayanto Chattopadhyay, Rokeya Prachy. Set against the backdrop of the late ‘60s and Bangladesh’s independence movement, this film tells the story of a family torn apart by religion and war. Anu, a shy young boy from rural East Pakistan, is sent away by his father to a Madrash (Islamic school). Far from this family and the warmth of his region’s Hindu festivities, Anu struggles to adapt to the school’s harsh monastic life. Discussion guest: Anupama Kapse, Queens College/ CUNY.
