Roy W. Howard may have been the greatest newspaper owner, editor and journalist of the 20th century. Starting as an Indiana newsboy, he pulled himself to the top of his profession, when he built the wire service, United Press, into an iconic news organization, and became chairman of the Scripps-Howard newspapers. Howard was the adviser and confidant to presidents from Woodrow Wilson to Eisenhower. He interviewed such great contemporaries as Stalin, Hitler, Churchill and the Japanese Emperor. Howard’s biographer, Patricia Beard, tells Jim Zirin the secret of Roy Howard’s amazing success.
