Episode Details

Original tape date: April 12, 2011.

In 1913, Thomas Mott Osborne, a former mayor of Auburn, NY, spent a week incognito in the Auburn prison. Shocked by his experience he was determined “to turn prisons from human scrap heaps into human repair shops." Today the Osborne Association operates some of the country’s most innovative and effective services for New York State’s incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people and their families. Elizabeth Gaynes, the Association’s executive director, continues Thomas Osborne’s mission with creativity and passion as a leading advocate for prison reform.
