Ghita Schwarz, author of the novel "Displaced Persons," and an attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights, confirms New York's long history of embracing the immigrant, and agrees with Mayor Bloomberg that "we are the best." But, Ms. Schwarz continues, New York also has a history of situations that have made life difficult for the immigrant, among these: high cost of living, difficulty in getting and keeping jobs, poverty.
