Marguerite de Valois (Jeanne Moreau), sister of King Charles IX (Robert Porte), is married off to Henri de Navarre (Andre Versini). Powerless before the execution of her future lover, she must go against her heart and follow Henri IV and his partisans.

This was an early starring role for Jeanne Moreau (“Jules et Jim”) and also features future French comedy star Louis De Funes. Veteran French filmmaker Abel Gance (“Napoleon”) wrote the screenplay; Henri Alekan (“Beauty and the Beast”) photographed it; and Paul Misraki composed the score. Remade in 1994 with Isabelle Adjani in the lead role. In French with English subtitles.
