LAND OF WANDERING SOULS (Cambodia)

"The information superhighway" meets the Silk Road. Cambodians -- peasants with no land, demobilized soldiers, and families with no resources -- find desperately needed work laying the first fiber-optic cable across their country which will link with another crossing Europe. The filmmaker follows some of these people, nomadized as their work advances, who embody the contradictions that are met in bringing Cambodia back to life after 30 years of devastating war. (An edited version of this film was shown recently on PBS' Wide Angle) (A film by Cati Couteau and Rithy Panh)

Also: A STONE LEFT UNTURNED (Finland)

A tragicomic portrayal of a father and son relationship, told through a series of Laurel and Hardy-like vignettes (framing, hunting moose, attending cattle, etc.) in which the father despairs of the son's incompetence -- although neither will seek outside help no matter how desperate the need. With their stubbornness, speechlessness, and their difficulty in showing emotion, the two main characters are Finnish archetypes immediately recognizable in their homeland. (Produced by Ilkka Mertsola)
