Episode Details

Loving: Berta and Lourdes (Spain). Berta is “mentally deficient,” totally aware of her condition, eager to be able to do what her age mates do. Her parents, torn apart by anguish and disappointment, come to appreciate how the teenager has brought them a life they might otherwise have missed. Bring a handkerchief for the climax.when the young woman ultimately finds a loving partner.

Berta and Lourdes is one of 8 programs in a series of documentaries exploring the feelings, social relationships and everyday life of unknown people under difficult circumstances. It was first seen on TV Catalunya in Barcellona.

Contrabass (Russia). Felix, so-named because his father wished happiness for him, found happiness eluding him as grows into adulthood. Father, an autocratic peasant with a passion for classical music, has burdened the son with a lifelong career playing the string bass. “Nobody,” said Felix, “plays the contrabass voluntary.” Felix’s efforts to accommodate his adult lifestyle to the omnipresent, bulky, and despised string bass provide a slyly satirical and humorous look into Russian pop culture. There is even a role for Johnny Depp in Anna Melikian’s film of magical realism.
