This edition: Hunting Down an Angel
(Russia). Russian film biographer Grigory Libergal explores a new and non-Ken Burns technique for portraying the life of the famous. His subject is the early 20th Century Russian poet and novelist Andrei Bely. Libergal’s technique is to assemble clips of old silent films to portray episodes in the writer’s life. The histrionics of early film drama suit the story of a man variously described as “a blessed by the stars genius,” and “a vain show-off man” whose tempestuous love affairs and close but stormy relationship with his rival Aleksandr Blok was legendary.
The film was first broadcast on Kultura TV in Moscow.
