Episode Details

In the early 18th century, British literary observers noticed the gradual rise to prominence of a new kind of lengthy prose narrative. After much debate it was called a novel. The birth of the novel began in 1679 with John Bunyan, who is considered the Father of the English Novel. Additional novels explored include: Tom Jones, Pride and Prejudice, Ivanhoe, and Oliver Twist. This title also discusses works by the Brontë Sisters and Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
