First aired: June 11, 2014.

On this edition of Independent Sources hosted by Zyphus Lebrun, we examine how soccer has grown in the city and what’s continuing to make New York the US capital of the world’s game. This week’s show is hosted by Zyphus Lebrun and features interviews with Jack Keane an Irish immigrant who’s managed world-renowned soccer pubs like Nevada Smiths and the Football Factory. We also highlight the re emergence of the New York Cosmos, the team that tried to popularize the game to New York in the late seventies but failed despite featuring a roster that included the soccer god Pelé and a legend like Franz Beckenbauer. We also feature the Cosmos Copa a tournament started five years ago that brings together semi-professional teams from over 40 countries represented in the city. Then we profile the South Bronx United after school program that uses the sport to keep children in school.
