This edition: The Crown Heights IncidentTweet
Original tape date: July 11, 2016.
First aired: August 17, 2016.
On this edition of Independent Sources, hosted by Garry Pierre-Pierre, we mark the 25th anniversary of the Crown Heights riots. Simmering racial tension between Caribbean immigrants and Hasidic Jews erupted for several days after the death of a boy named Gavin Cato. New York learned a valuable lesson in the wake of the violence, one that it has passed on to other US cities. Garry sits down with three stalwarts of the community, two of whom were there during the incident and a new comer, to talk about the lessons learned and how the community has changed since then.
