This edition: Italian Heritage & Culture Month Special #4 2016: Laura Caparrotti & KIT Theater | Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino
First aired: October 27, 2016.
ITALICS Celebrates its 10th Season of Italian Heritage and Culture Month Specials.
This special episode – the fourth of our 2016 series – features Laura Caparrotti, Founder and Artistic Director of Kairos Italy theater. We meet up with Mauro Durante of musical group Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino at (Le) Poisson Rouge in New York City.
Born in Rome, Italy, and living in New York City for the past twenty years, Laura Caparrotti is committed to bringing the best of Italian theater to all five New York boroughs. Her extensive theatrical background links her to the most important of Italian theater history, and she has an eye to the future of thespian tradition, bringing significant new American theater to Italy and beyond. Also known to “Italics” viewers as “Professor Margherita,” Laura joins Anthony Tamburri in our studio.
Mauro Durante, of the widely popular Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, inherited the group from his aunt and uncle, who founded it more than 40 years ago. Lucia Grillo spoke with the band’s leader during a recent show in Manhattan’s West Village. “Italics” brings you highlights from this performance of the pizzica and tarantata fused with a contemporary sound.
