This edition: Print History
As the first “one-to-many” media technology, the printing press was an integral part of the major social and cultural upheavals that came to define the modern world. The video lesson begins with the birth of print technology and traces its influence on mass literacy, politics, science, and religion. The program looks at the role of print in the war for American independence and in the articulation of the principles underlying democracy. It also explores the dramatic “massification” of nineteenth-century print media: the penny press, national magazines, and numerous inexpensive books.
