Episode Details

The process of interpreting the constitutional right to freedom of expression becomes increasingly complex with the advent of each new media technology. Chapter 15 in the textbook is an abbreviated “law school in ten easy lessons.” It covers prohibitions against prior restraint, protecting news sources, reporters’ access to information, defamation, invasion of privacy by the press, obscenity and pornography, regulating broadcasting, copyright, and the media’s involvement in trials and courtroom proceedings. This lesson describes the broad range of issues affecting the media to provide you with a framework for understanding media rights and responsibilities.
