In the 1960's, public school children, anthropologists, Brooklyn residents unearthed Weeksville, a once thriving community of free African-Americans dating to before the Civil War until its gradual absorption into the borough of Brooklyn. "Brooklyn's Promised Land: The Free Black Community of Weeksville, New York" about these citizens, was written by Judith Wellman.
