First aired: January 8, 2018.

As lawmakers, workers’ advocates and journalists focus increasingly on the status of immigrants and low-income citizens, we are learning about the racial and economic injustices that they suffer every day. The Worker’s Justice Project is a Brooklyn-based center that addresses the inequities faced by day laborers and domestic workers. The center provides them with a safe space where they can defend their rights and voice their concerns over such issues as safe work environments, fair wages and workplace discrimination.

Ligia Guallpa, the executive director of the Worker’s Justice Project, is herself the daughter of a former day laborer and garment worker.

We’ll talk to her about the center’s work and about the stories of the thousands of people who make up this often “invisible workforce” – especially at a time when anti-immigrant sentiments and policies are on the rise.
