Episode Details

Original tape date: January 24, 2019.

First aired: February 4, 2019.

In her previous appearance on this show, journalist Reniqua Allen discussed an opinion piece she had written that described the growing trend among African-American 37 years old and under to leave the north, west and Midwest-- where their forebears came to escape from southern racism—and return to the South.

In her new book, It Was All a Dream: A New Generation Confronts the Broken Promise to Black America, Allen takes the discussion a step further - interviewing more than seventy five black millennials in cities and towns across the country about the challenges they face in trying to attain “the American dream.” Does the notion that “ anyone can succeed and enjoy a prosperous life through hard work” really apply to them? Or is it just that---only a dream.?
