The former Soviet republic of Dagestan, located in the Caucasian region within the geographic realm of Russia, is a transition zone between the Russian and Muslim worlds. Its people represent more than 30 ethnic groups, many speaking their own native language or dialect, and its farmers are attempting to embrace the concepts of private ownership and entrepreneurship while dealing with the remnants of collective ownership and centralized production planning.
