Episode Details

Throughout its long history, Shanghai has been a port looking out from a country isolated by geographic and political barriers. But today it is undergoing a commercial and economic transformation, thanks to relaxed trade restrictions that are allowing huge amounts of industry and foreign investment to pour into the city. Farther up the Chang Jiang River, economic reforms being pushed by the central government are transforming small rural communities, too. In the village of Sija, a new garment factory has spurred remarkable economic growth in a formerly agricultural region and raised the standard of living for the local people. But is it wise for so many people to rely on one factory for their livelihood?
