This edition: The Firebird of Rio Maximo (Cuba)
Rio Maximo is a natural paradise surrounded by gigantic swamps and has become the largest nesting area for Caribbean pink flamingos. Even though the flamingo has a rich history and legendary status with the Cuban people, development and industrialization have begun to endanger this firebird of paradise.
Fefo, the director of Rio Maximo National Animal Refuge, passionately takes charge of the return of the flamingos’ vast numbers. We join Fefo, and some of his men as they patrol the refuge in search of abandoned babies, condemned by their mothers to die in the swamps. Even though this does disrupt the process of natural selection, it is a way for Fefo and his men to balance out the destruction mankind has brought to these firebirds.
