Michael Stoler asks his guests how each decided to become a doctor. Dr. Spiegel was always interested in science; Dr. Charney's first and second choice was to play or coach pro basketball; Dr. Halperin wanted to be a civil rights attorney; and Dr. Smith had studied physics and bio physics before deciding to combine people and science. Most agreed that their mothers played a part in their decision.

What's changed? Current students: many are older, many more women, many do something productive before entering med school; some consider duel degrees - the physician scientist. Discussing the business of medicine, all agreed that the current practice of fee for service must be changed to emphasis prevention on a life-long basis.
