During the last presidential campaign, republican strategists enjoyed reminding people that Senator John Edwards was, ugh, a trial lawyer, a term that has become synonymous in certain circles with snake-oil salesman and sleazy ambulance chasers. More recently, Congress passed a new law that places limits on class action lawsuits. Why all this focus on lawyers and their activities? And what impact might it have on you? Stephen Gillers, a law professor at NYU Law School, discusses this issue.
