This edition: Emily Mann, artistic directorTweet
Original tape date: June 2, 2006.
Playwright, director, and artistic director of the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey, Emily Mann describes what she does for a living simply as, “I make theatre.” Pioneering and politically-conscious theatre at that, whether in regards to her directing experience-she was the first woman to direct on most of the stages where she's worked, in the 70s, 80s, and even the 90s-whether in regards to plays she has written-her “Theatre of Testimony” genre creates plays based on oral histories and people's own stories-or in regards to the way she runs the Tony-Award winning McCarter Theatre, choosing well-known provocative plays as well as new ones by diverse playwrights.
