Fraternal twins Rahel and Estha struggle to reclaim their lives after their childhoods are destroyed by tragic circumstances. Past and present merge in this narrative of Indian society and politics. The many types of English presented in the book, and their meanings, are explored, as well as the culture of the caste system. Featured speakers include Simon Gikandi of Princeton University, author Evelyn Ch’ien, and Faith Salie, actress and host of the radio program Fair Game.
